Mac OS X on a PC?

For decades, man has pondered the question, “Can Apple’s OS X operating system be install on a PC?”

Since the 1980s, Apple has been selling a proprietary brand of computers called the “Mac” it’s short for “Macintosh”, incidentally it’s a name of type of apple. Apple’s proprietary OS is unique. In the past the OS can only be installed on specific hardware such as Motorola’s Power PC chip. Getting Apple’s OS to run on anything other than the Mac components was practically impossible. So that left two kinds of computer users; the mac-guy and the PC-guy. Three, if you count the Linux geeks.

There are many reasons to love a Mac as well as many reasons to hate it. The Mac is stable as it’s OS is built on a Unix core, FreeBSD, and is fine-tuned for their proprietary hardware. The OS is colorful and pretty and easy to use. Unlike the PC, the Mac doesn’t have a large library of applications (Software). If you have a Mac and thinking about playing games, you’re shit-out-luck. Also, when you buy a Mac you’re pretty much stuck with all it’s hardware. You can upgrade the hard drive and the RAM which is probably about it. Compared to Intel CPU the Motorola’s Power PC process was never quite has fast.

Anyhow, recently, Apple as opted to switch and use use Intel processors. Now Apple’s computers can utilize Intel’s more powerful CPUs. This switch also enable’s Apple to take advantage of Intel’s economy of scale and decrease their cost of their computers. All of this means that Apple’s OS, called OS X, is now compatible with Intel processors rather than Motorola’s. With the right hack and some code changes, and patching the OS X can be install in a PC.

Don’t worry, your eyes are not playing tricks on you. It’s true those are pictures of the Mac OS X running on my IBM ThinkPad. My laptop is currently running a dual boot of Windows XP and OS X. The installation was quite painless, but it did require quite a bit of time. The ThinkPad is equipped with a 1.5 Ghz Centrino with 512 MB of RAM. The OS X is running natively and the performance is fast. So far everything is working perfectly except for the wireless NIC. Hopefully I can figure out or find a way to get it to work. I’m still fiddling around with this OS. It’s not bad, but so far I still prefer my Windows.

X-Men 3 : The Last Stand

xmen3

Professor X and his mutant team are back. The plot revolves around the conflict between mutants and non-mutants (normal humans). The mutants are believed to be dangerous and an abomination to society. So a cure is made to deactive the “X” gene which removes their mutant powers completely reducing any mutant to a mere human. Magneto and his mutant goons are out to destroy the cure as well as those who oppose their cause. Magneto manages to bring Jean Grey, who is now the Phoenix, to assist in his efforts. So who is there to save the people from Magneto and his mutant “Brotherhood”? You guessed it, the X-men.

I must say I was pretty excited and couldn’t wait for this movie. The trailers were exciting and the critic reviews were decent. But after watching the movie, I am very disappointed. Not only did it had nothing to do with the Pheonix Saga which was based of the comic series, but the characters are portrayed much different from the previous X-men movies as well as the comics. Storm and Wolverine lead the movie as the other X-men members died off. Yes, some of them actually die. Wolverine plays a more dramatic role where he deals with his feelings and love for Jean Grey, so much for the give-no-shit attiude badass killing claw-ripping mutant. And as for storm, I’m sorry to say, but Halle Barry couldn’t be cornier, ala “Cat Woman”.

This has to be the end of the X-men series, at least for the big screen. I believe if Brian Singer came back to direct this sequel it would of been a great movie.

The Vacation

I haven’t really officially taken a vacation from work yet, but this past week, including Memorial weekend, I took it off to rest and relax, hence, the lack of any blog entries last week. I spent the weekday sleeping in and put in some good running and biking. For the Memorial weekend I took a road trip to San Diego with some friends. The weather wasn’t so great until Sunday. On Sunday the beaches were packed and there was plenty of alcohol floating around and not to mention all the beach bunnies too.

Pictures of my trip has been posted in the gallery. Check ’em out.

The Da Vinci Code

I haven’t read Dan Brown’s book where the movie was made after, but I have read and understood the premise of the story behind it. I’ve seen countless History Channel ‘Decoding the Da Vinci Code’ shows, and I’ve also rented a Blockbuster DVD about the in-depth history of the relating subject. The movie is directed by Ron Howard and starred by Tom Hanks. They’re a great combo and have worked on some good movies in the past.

Robert Langdon played by Tom Hanks, a professor and an expert in cryptology, is called in by the French police for a murder investigation. The victim is an acquaintance of Langdon, who has left clues of a secret and to his murder suspect. Somehow the French police are convince that Langdon is the murderer and is trying to keep him in police custody. With the help of the murdered victim’s daughter, Langdon escapes, and their search for the killer and the unraveling of the secret begins.

Despite the fact that critics gave a negative review (I wonder if those reviews were somehow biased on account of religious loyalty), I find it quite the opposite. This suspense-thriller movie is a tad long and may put some people off. Nonetheless, the movie progresses quite well and keeps you engaged. This is one of those movies that will require an attention to detail and a bit of understanding of the Christian religion.

Video Updates: Divx Web Plugin

All previous videos and future videos will require the Divx Web Plugin. If you don’t have the plugin your browser will prompt you to enable “Active X” and then request you to install the plugin. This new way of accessing the videos is much better. The video is actually streamed, so you don’t have to wait for the entire movie to be buffered. The plugin is much smaller than downloading the entire setup file. Hopefully my videos should be playable on all platforms.

All the videos now have their own category. If you want to browse the videos only, you check out the “Videos” link on the side menu listed under “Categories”

Wireless mice

I’ve always had a corded mouse when using any computer. I always thought, “Why need one when you’re sitting inches away from your computer anyway?” When I got my new laptop, I decided to pick up a wireless Logitech mouse. On my previous laptop, I had a corded mouse and had to unwind to plug it. It wasn’t a much of a deal until I used the wireless mouse and found it much more convenient. When using the mouse you actually feel the freedom of not having to adjust the mouse for cord slack and even having an extra bit of space whereas before the cord would be obstructive. When I decided to replace my desktop computer mouse I had to get another wireless mouse.

From left to right: V400 and V200; both these models are for notebook-use. There are high-end wireless mice made specifically for desktops with rechargeable docking bays rather than having batteries.

The V400 is the one I’m using for my notebook. It’s Logitech’s latest notebook wireless mouse. It currently sports a dual laser engine and is able to work on more surfaces than the old optical mice. The V400, which is marketed to be a rugged go-anywhere mouse, have very comfortable rubber grips, and the most impressive feature is the tiny wireless receiver can be stored inside the mouse itself when not in use.

My desktop mouse is about 5 years old, and it was getting so dirty and ugly that it needed to be replaced even though it works perfectly. I replaced it with the V200, which is the an older model compared to the v400, but works just as well, in fact it works a bit better. The V400 seems to go to sleep a bit too quickly when left idle for a short moment. Unlike the V400, this mouse sports the older generation optical tracking and doesn’t have a compartment to store the receiver, instead it snaps to the bottom of the mouse when not in use. The receiver holds in its place well, but it can come loose when put in a bag where it can roll around.

If you haven’t tried a wireless mouse and still using a corded one I recommend picking up a cheap model which can be as cheap as $15. Try it out and see how much more convenient and even extra space it can provide.

Muay Thai fighter vs Street trained fighter

This fight took place in June of 2000 at King of the Cage 4. Duane ‘Bang’ Ludwig is a Lightweight Champion kickboxer who trains under the legend, Bas Rutten. Bang takes on Shad Smith, a brawler who has claimed to be in over 1,000 street fights.

This is the fight that got me interested in taking Muay Thai. In an actual street fight anything can happen, but in a cage/ring a street fighter’s skill can only go so far… as to not getting destroyed quicker than someone with no experience at all.

NOTE: Check out Shad Smith sporting his Airwalk shoes in the cage.
