UFC 71 – The King has fallen

chuckvsrampage

The Iceman Chuck Liddell, UFC’s most dominant Light Heavyweight fighter, has been unbeated in about 3 years. Last night saw the Iceman fell via KO by the hands of an opponent who last beaten him, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson.

How did Rampage beat Chuck?

It’s all about styles of fighting. Chuck’s hands are dynamite and anyone caught with one of his punches will go to sleep. Chuck knows the power he has and uses it well. Chuck likes to keep his distance and throw his looping punches and combinations. His strategy includes moving laterally around the cage or even back pedaling to lure his opponents. From there, Chuck would catch them with his big hooks.

Unfortunately, the strategy seems to work with grapplers with less stellar stand-up skills. Unlike Chucks past victims, Rampage has a get-in-your-face style and actually has the skill to go toe-to-toe with the Iceman. Rampage controlled the Octagon from the get-go. Chuck moved around trying to find his range. Every punch Chuck threw Rampage was able to block. It was during a flurry of Chuck’s punches that Rampage was able to throw a heavy right hook that drops Chuck to the floor. Smelling blood, Rampage pounced and finished the fight.

Chuck has now been dethroned and Rampage is in the spotlight. A title defense is in the works, and Rampage will have to defend his newly held title against long time friend, Dan Henderson. Pride’s 185 and 205 lbs Champion.

Memorial Day Weekend

Have a fun and safe Memorial Day weekend. This weekend is the start of the summer season so don’t forget your sunblock, and for others, sun tan lotion. You know who I’m talking about. 😀

Spiderman 3

I haven’t done any reviews lately due to the fact I don’t have time to even rent a movie let alone drive to the theaters. But I did get a chance to watch Spiderman 3 last week. The hype and anticipation for this movie surpassed its predecessors. The first Spiderman movie was great, and the sequel was even better. If they could keep this trend with the third movie it would probably be the best movie ever made.

Unfortunately, it was quite the opposite. I don’t even know where to start. Spiderman is over-glorified in the movie making it feel corny. The story is poor and the character development for the two villians are abysmal. On top of all that the movie seem to took a turn for the worst with unnecessary scenes that took away the value of the movie and the spirit of Spiderman.

Where is the intense drama, action, and deep character development seen in the first two movies? The story seems to have written by a bunch of third graders whose comic book experience comes from the wrappers of Bazooka Joe bubble gum. With all the hype behind this movie Spiderman 3 has turned out to be one of the year’s, if not, the most disappointing movie.

Andrew Hill Track and Field

Andrew Hill is my high school Alma Mater. I coached back in 2005, but missed out in 2006 due to a work schedule conflict. This season I came back and got the opportunity to coach the team.

This is one of the team’s most successful seasons in about 8 years. The girls finished strong with a 5-2 record and placing second in Division Finals. The boys went undefeated with 7-0 and taking the Division Final Championships.

Unfortunately, a handful of talented seniors will be graduating, but it’s made up by having a young group of freshmen and sophomores with tons of potential. Our team will be even stronger next season.

Congratulations team!

Warriors Win and Moves on in the Playoffs

warriors

They win the series against the Dallas Mavericks. The Warriors won it in awesome fashion. Not only did they beat the number one seeded team in the playoffs but they blew them out at home in Oakland with the final score of 111 – 86.

Warriors and Sharks!!!

gswarriorssjsharks

I’m not a big basketball or a hockey fan, but the fact that two local sports team in my town are in the playoffs is exciting. Both teams are doing great, and I have been following their playoff series with friends who are much bigger and devoted fans.

Win or lose in their series, I will remain a fan. Go Warriors and Go Sharks!

Vista Ultimate – 5 Months Later

OS Factor

If you’re the type that use your computer for email, word processing and casual web browsing then there is no use in upgrading to Vista. If you decide to upgrade anyways the only noticable benefits are the flashy new GUI.

Power users fall into the same category, but the only thing that might hinder them is software compatibility. Currently, some software companies are pushing out Vista patches and updates. Smaller software company seems to have a difficult time catching up. So before you upgrade make sure your application is 100% compatible with Vista.

The Enhancements

Vista is touted for its security. It’s the most secure Windows ever released. I hope so. Too bad the security isn’t transparent which is why many of the software applications are not compatible. My biggest gripe is the User Account Control (UAC). When enabled an annoying pop-up window opens everytime you adjust a setting. Some applications require you to turn it off before installing. And everytime you turn it off or on it requires a system reboot. I immediately turn the UAC off after I installed the OS. Ironically, the User Account Control is where all that awesome security is based. So you have to choose between being annoyed or having a more secured OS.

Vista Media Center

One of my biggest reason for installing Vista was to use its Media Center. The visuals and graphics of the Media Center looks great, but functionality-wise it’s a piece of shit. The previous version, MCE 2005 is so much better in terms of ease of use and compatibility. The way the media is organized in Vista is horrendous. Grouping pictures, music, and videos into one area is NOT an efficient way of organizing. And even more idiotic aspect of Vista is that it doesn’t support third party video codecs. The most advance OS doesn’t even support the industry standard video codec, H.264 (AVC). This is what happens when a company like Microsoft tries to shove and force the use of their own codec down consumers’ throats, they get a crappy product that is ‘broken by design’.

I’ve tried several versions of Vista well before it’s retail release. Each release got better and better, but unfortunately its retail release is somewhat feels a bit incomplete. I have installed Vista Ultimate on my work laptop and my desktop computer and it looks like I will be switching back to XP soon.

My suggestion, save your money and buy something that actually works.

UFC 70, And the Upsets Continue

ufc70

For the first time UFC gave the American and Canadian MMA fans a free UFC PPV-type event. Everyone else in the world had to pay to watch. The card was stacked with big names such as Arlovski, Bisping, Werdum, and Mirko Cro Cop. This is the third UFC event in a row where the main event bout was won by the underdog. These underdogs weren’t just average underdogs, the odds were heavily against them. Everyone expected them to lose.

First, it was Couture who got the upset by beating Tim Syliva by unanimous decision. Then it was Matt Serra that beat George St. Pierre by TKO, ref stoppage. And last night, Gonzaga, who did the unthinkable, KOed Cro Cop with a high kick to the temple dropping the Croation like a sack of potatos.

It’s either hell has frozen over or that MMA is taking its course of natural selection. These upsets maybe exciting for the newer fans of MMA, but for me, a long-time and serious fan, it’s driving me nuts.

Tragic Day at Virginia Tech

It’s all over the news. A gunman went on a shooting rampage killing 32 people and wounding many others before killing himself. I woke up this morning and saw CNN list that 22 people were killed, then when I got to work the number went up to 33 including the killer.

What a horrific event. All I can think of right now is how the Virginia Tech community, the media, local police, parents of the victims are going to spin the situation. Since the killer is dead, who’s to blame now? More importantly, will Al Sharpton show up somewhere demanding justice?

My money is on that a school official will be blamed. I don’t know for what reason, but it’ll be something. Let’s see what happens…
