Jet Li’s Fearless

fearless

I must say the title of the movie doesn’t fit the story. It’s probably from poor translation. The plot takes Li’s character on a path from a cocky hometown hero to humbled martial arts legend that unites the people of China. The movie contains awesome choreographed fight scenes taken place in ancient China.

Rarely do Jet Li’s movies have interesting storylines, but this one is loosely based on a true story, and it’s too bad the writers were unable to captivate some sort of authenticity and experience. Instead, it seems the martial arts sequenced were the prime focus of the movie. The high production values and face-paced fight scenes will keep you entertained, but don’t expect to be engaged into the plot.

Enabling IIS Hosted PHP scripts to use SMTP Sendmail

If you’re hosting any PHP scripts that uses the sendmail() function you know that the function will not work when hosted on Windows IIS. The sendmail() function is reserved for webservers running apache. I have found a fairly easy method to enable the mailing features for PHP scripts that uses sendmail.

First, you will need to have the SMTP virtual server installed on your local machine. You’ll need to change the Properties > Access > Relay Restrictions and add the local IP of your server (I didn’t know localhost required permission to relay mail. It took me 2 days to figure that out :p )

You’ll need to download sendmail.zip

Once downloaded, extract and copy the sendmail.exe & sendmail.ini file into a directory.
for example: c:\Inetpub\usr\lib\

Edit the sendmail.ini
for example: smtp_server=localhost, smtp_port=25, and default_domain=yourserver. Default_domain can be any name.
(the other variables don’t need to be edited)

You will then need to edit the php.ini in c:\windows\

Search for:

; For Unix only. You may supply arguments as well (default: “sendmail -t -i.”)
;sendmail_path =

You’ll will then need to remove the semi-colon to uncomment out the line and add the path to the sendmail.exe
for example: sendmail_path = c:\Inetpub\usr\lib\sendmail.exe -t -i

(be sure to add the -t -i flags otherwise it will not work.)

Lastly, you will need to edit the permissions to the cmd.exe located in the C:\Windows\System32 folder and add the USERS group and add read/execute access. This allows the sendmail.exe to be executed by the server.

That’s it! Your mail feature will now work with your PHP scripts. Enjoy.

I’m still here

Interesting. I got few emails from people asking for more movie reviews, guitar videos, and guitar tabs. Some people DO read my blog :p

I’m still alive, just been busy with work, playing video games, and getting into running-shape for the Silicon Valley Marathon at the end of the month. That’s why the past few weeks has been scarce on blog entries.

I got a couple of movie reviews to do and guitar tabs to send to a few people. I should get those done soon, but I’m not making any promises.

BJ Penn vs Matt Hughes 2 recap

If you’re an MMA fan then you know that in early 2004 BJ Penn moved from UFC’s lightweight division to welterweight to fight Matt Hughes who at the time is the most decorated and dominant fighter in UFC history. The fight turned out to be one of the biggest upsets in MMA as Penn was able to tapout Hughes in the first round. After winning the title, Penn left the UFC to pursue more lucrative and challenging fights abroad, which left the title vacated until Hughes picked it up again.

Last Saturday Penn got his chance at getting his title back from Hughes. But unlike their last fight things were much different.

Round 1:
Penn came out strong keeping the fight on his feet peppering Hughes with his jabs. Hughes made several attempts to take Penn down but was unsuccessful. The fight remained on their feet and they each exchange punches, at one point Hughes was thumbed in the eye by accident by one of Penn’s punches. The fight continued and finished the round on their feet. The round clearly went Penn with his crisp boxing and takedown defense.

Round 2:
Hughes exchanged a few punches with Penn before making a couple of attempts to take Penn down. Hughes is successful and gets Penn down up against the cage. Penn is constantly working on his position from his guard. Hughes rained down some punches and elbows. As Hughes threw a hard elbow Penn was able to slip pass it to sweep Hughes to get his back. Hughes almost slips out of Penn’s legs but Penn holds on to Hughes in a awkward triangle hold. The triangle was loose, but Penn was able to capture the arm and attempted to put in an armbar-type move but was unsuccessful and the round ended with Penn’s leg wrapped around Hughes. The round was close, but I would have given it to Hughes because of the takedown and the several hard shots he rained on Penn. Penn’s last minute submission attempt didn’t really put Hughes in much danger; the triangle was loose and the arm bar attempt was more of a hold than a submission.

Round 3:
Hughes comes out and tags Penn with his punches at will. Penn doesn’t look too good, as though he lost his will to fight, and doesn’t have an answer to any of Hughes strikes. Penn does a weak takedown attempt in which Hughes manage to stuff Penn getting into his half guard. Hughes passes the guard and puts Penn into a crucifix. Hughes has control of both Penn’s arms and with Hughes right arm being free he rains down onto Penn’s face for over 30 seconds until Big John McCarthy stopped the fight. The third round was a complete domination by Hughes ending with a referee’s stoppage.

Overall, Penn did well in defending the bigger and stronger Hughes’s takedowns. Penn is one of the best BJJ practitioners and he doesn’t seem to use it to his advantage. It’s a shame that Penn doesn’t go for takedowns and utilize his ground game. As for Hughes, he did what he does best; overwhelming his opponents via takedowns and pounding them out until the ref stops it or his opponent taps out.

What’s next for Penn? That’s two losses in a row. He should move down to 155 and clear out that division capture the title. If he stays in the welterweight division he has very long road ahead of him if he ever wants another title shot.

What’s next for Hughes? Penn was actually a replacement for George St. Pierre for this fight since George got injured during practice. Now, George has recovered and will be Hughes next opponent in November. I can’t wait.

Crank

crank

Chev Chelios, played by Jason Statham, awakens in his home in a drunken state and only to find out that he has been poisoned by a fatal drug, the Beijing cocktail. The catch, to slow down the affect of the drug Chev must keep is adrenaline flowing through his veins.

Chev, his life basically on a timer, goes on a rampage keeping his adrenaline up with crazy stunts and injection of epineferine only to buy enough time to get those who has poisoned him.

Crank is somewhere along the lines of the Transporter meets Speed. The action is non-stop and will keep you on the edge of your seat.

“E.T. phone home…” via Blackberry

Nowadays cell phones are the ultimate tech device no one can leave home without. For the past six years I’ve had a handful of different cell phones, but my recent new cell phone, the Blackberry 8700c, is the best so far.

blackberry

I mainly use my phone for texting and the occasional phone call. This Blackberry has a full QWERTY keyboard that makes sending messages much easier. The Blackberry’s OS has many features I don’t think I have much use for, at least for now. But having the ability to access a third-party email account anywhere at anytime is something I’ve been missing out with the other phones. You can even have a full IM client for chatting that works with the major IM protocols. Unlike my other QWERTY equipped phone, the Blackberry has a trademark clickable wheel that makes navigation much faster and efficient.

Besides its nifty application features, the Blackberry has an amazing spacious hi-res screen that’ll give the PSP a run for its money. Combined with its solidly built construction the phone feels rugged enough to take anywhere and maybe even last for years to come.

This Blackberry is tailored for business-use which lacks some obvious consumer features such as expandable memory storage and a camera. Given that this phone is almost a year old maybe the next updated model can have those features.

Note: The new Blackberry Pearl phone has all those great features and then some, but it doesn’t have a full QWERTY keyboard and no click-wheel.

Blog update

I’ve made some updates, so you guys may or may not notice some changes. I’m in the progress of getting everything back to normal.

Most of the updates are for security issues and backend admin stuff so there shouldn’t be any big changes.

I’m Back from Las Vegas

I’m back. Going to Vegas by yourself ain’t that bad. You don’t have to deal with waiting for anyone or rooming up with someone who snores like a wilderbeast mating call. Unlike before, I didn’t have the same luck at the tables 🙁 Someone didn’t cross their fingers hard enough for me.

Most of my expenses came from cab fares and food/drinks.
Another huge chunk of my money went to a spa. Yup that’s right. I went to a spa and got pampered like a rich spoiled little white kid who’s father is some hotshot politician.

During this weekday Las Vegas wasn’t crowded. The people are so nice. On several occassions I was asked by several women if I would like a great time. Unfortunately, I was on my way to a buffet and had to decline. But it wasn’t like I didn’t already have a good time.

Here are some pictures that I’ve taken. Enjoy.

Miami Vice

miamivice

After Collateral, Jamie Fox returns for this Michael Mann film. Co-starring with Colin Farrell, Fox plays Rico Tubbs and Farrell plays Sonny Crockett in a modern-day version of the 1980’s TV action-drama Miami Vice. Mann’s film has an artistic feel that makes his movies feel gritty and raw. This movie has a fly-on-the wall approach and you watch the drama and events unfold from scene to scene.

Miami Vice has more drama than action. The movie starts off slow and maintains at that level up until the last moments of the movie. Man does a great job of giving the classic TV show a nice modern day makeover, but it seems Mann has concentrated too much on his artistic approach to the movie rather than developing the characters in the movie or deepening plot.

Guitar time part 9

It’s my acoustic version of Panic’s ‘Lying Is The Most Fun A Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off’ I hope they stop using these long name conventions on their next album. Oh yea, sorry for the bad vocals.
