UFC 109

Two legends of MMA will be battling for the best old-guy-fighter moniker on Febuary 6th at UFC 109. Randy Couture, a 46-year old walking collie flower ear, is putting up his old-man status on the line against another aging pugilist brethren Mark Coleman. In the heydays of UFC Mark Coleman was a devastating beast. He’s considered the grandfather of ground and pound. His ability to take fighters down and turn them into a sack of mash potatoes showed that wrestling was as just as dangerous and necessary as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in mixed-martial arts. Standing in front of Coleman in the cage is the ‘Natural’. Randy Couture has been in crazy battles in the heavyweight and light heavyweight division winning titles in each of them during his career. What makes him such a dangerous fighter is that he is an analytical fighter that comes in with a great game plan that works.

This will be one of the few fights where I think Randy Couture is a favorite. Expect Couture to tire Coleman out by circling around the cage a couple of times and implement his dirty boxing. If history is any indication Mark Coleman should be gasping for air and his arms at his waist by the 3rd minute of the first round. Randy has one of the best cardio not for his age, but in the entire UFC roster. If Coleman is smart he would need to use his strength and wrestling to take down Couture and keep him on the ground as long as he can. And if the UFC is smart they should issue a stipulation for this match that the loser would retire and stays retired. Luckily for me I will be at this event in Las Vegas, thanks to my girlfriend getting me these tickets for my birthday. I should be at the weigh ins and autograph sessions and should be posting pictures on my blog when I can.

My Picks:

Randy Couture beats Mark Coleman
Nate Marquardt beats Chael Sonnen
Mike Swick beats Paulo Thiago
Demian Maia beats Dan Miller
Frank Trigg beats Matt Serra
Mac Danzig beats Justin Buchholz
Melvin Guillard beats Ronnys Torres
Rob Emerson beats Phillipe Nover
Brian Stann beats Phil Davis

iPad = iDisappointed

Well Steve Jobs finally announce the hotly anticipated Apple tablet. The iPad so it’s called. The unvieling of the new device left me thinking that no matter how shiny and sleek this tablet is it won’t be as successful as its iPhone or any of its other products.

My assumptions were correct that its just a larger version of the iPhone and iPod Touch. I’m very surprised the iPad lacks many of the features that makes it a real tablet. First of all, like its diminutive sibling  the iPhone and iPod Touch it does not multitask. Yup, you can only work with one application at a time. Second, the Sarfari browser lacks Adobe Flash support. For a device that prides itself on providing a great browsing exprience it’s lack one of the more popular features found in all browsers. Third, it’s missing hand writing recognition.

If Apple added at least one of these feature it would have made it a much more desirable device that differentiates itself from the iPhone and iPod Touch. This iPad is a niche product that will probably compete more so with Amazon’s Kindle and other e-readers. As for it being a netbook killer, better luck next time Steve.

The Book of Eli

Denzel Washington is a stoic machete wielding bad ass that is traveling across a post apocalyptic United States carrying the last Bible. Carnagie, played by Gary Oldman, hunts down Eli for the book hoping it would give him religious and political power. Book of Eli provides a lot of action and its doesn’t go overboard with any of it’s religious tone. Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman in any movie is worth watching and this movie is worth watching.

iTablet, iPad tomorrow?

Tomorrow is Apple’s most anticipated event. Rumors are flying all over the internet about the upcoming unannounced Apple tablet.  Many of the rumors have been consistent with each other and some big wigs in book publishing have hinted that the tablet will be revealed soon.

I’ve always been a fan of their hardware since they switch from the PowerPC to Intel. As for their tablet I’m still pondering how a bigger version of the iPhone would add something unique to the game. You can probably do the majority of the things with an iPhone than you can with the so called tablet. I don’t think it can compete sucessfully with a tradition laptop or netbook. The lack of a physical keyboard hinders it from being nimble mobile computer.

I think the iTablet will be geared more as an e-reader gadget where it would be competing directly with Amazon’s Kindle and other e-readers. With the right content Apple’s rumored device can hit the ground running if they can provide the vast amount of ebooks and multimedia selection.

I was planning to buy a Kindle during the holidays, but I was holding out on what Apple had to offer. If the rumors are true the only real question is the battery life on this device. If it’s anything like the iPhone 3G(S) I would be hard press to buy something that would require it to be charged constantly.

Daybreakers

Daybreakers takes this vampire movie off course a bit and into the future where the humans are the minority. The vampire race’s supply of human blood becomes scarce and the race to develope an alternative falls on the shoulders of hemotologist Edward Dalton, who is played by Ethan Hawke. Dalton is confronted by small band of humans, maybe the last few, to help him find a cure. Unlike the other vampire movies of late Daybreakers provides somewhat an orignal plot that vamp fans can enjoy.

My Blackberry Apps

For those who have a Blackberry and don’t know what apps to install on their phone here is a list of current apps that I use on mine.  Many of the apps can be download on Blackberry App World or can be download at the developer’s website. The apps listed below may not work with all models. I currently use the 9700, so be sure to check on developer’s website to see if your phone is compatible.

Facebook – Anyone who has a Facebook account will need to have this app. It’s a great app to view your Facebook notifications and post status updates.

Beejive – If you have multiple IM accounts Beejive provides access to all of them in one app. There is a 30 day trial version that is available to check out.

Associated Press – This is my favorite news app. It has a simple and organized GUI. It provides nation, international, and local news.

Amazon – I use this app often especially when I go shopping for price comparison. If you shop at Amazon.com often then you’ll need this app.

Avatar

Avatar is James Cameron’s first movie since Titanic. There has been a ton of buzz surrounding this movie. Most notably the movie could be the most expensive movie ever made with production costing over $500 million. Given Cameron’s track record many if not all his movies have been big blockbuster hits, and with Avatar it will recoup it’s money and go on to make huge profits.

I went to see this movie through word of mouth from friends and online reviews. I wasn’t really sold on the movie trailer which I saw during the summer. It look more like a cartoon than a real life action movie. I saw the XD 3D version at Cinemark theaters. The leather plush seats and and large digital screen wasn’t too shabby. To my amazement the movie was better than I had expected given the already positive reviews I had heard from my friends. I didn’t care too much for the 3D aspect of it. It didn’t add much value to the movie at all. I could have watched the non 3D version and I would have been fine with it.

The plot isn’t so original, but the story is good and moves along at a good pace. The movie is almost 3 hours long, but it feels much shorter. The special effects and CGI animation are amazing. Cameron somehow manage to seamlessly pull you in to the movie and make you forget about the computer generated environments. If you’re one of those people who wants to wait for the DVD release I suggest you check it out in the theaters to get the full cinema effect.

Merry Christmas Everyone

Hope everyone got what they wanted for Christmas. So before everyone heads out to meet with their in-laws and the rest of the family merry Christmas and have a happy New Year.

New Google Phone “Nexus”

googlenexus

A good friend of mine got his hands on the new Google phone. According to him “it is really sleek… it feels nice in your hand” and “the screen res[solution] seems way better than the iphone too”. “It’s screen is slightly bigger and it feels light, yet durable/well constructed.”

The rumors on the interweb has this dropping sometime in January as an unlocked phone. I can’t wait.

I got a change to play with Verizon’s Eris and Sprint’s Hero which look very similar to the Nexus. Both are great phones and I’m sure the Nexus would be just as cool if not better.
