Rampage

Rampage is loosely based off one of my favorite childhood games. I remember playing this game hours on ends on the Sega Master System.  Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays the titular role in saving the world.  Unlike other movies based on video games Rampage is a fun and exciting through and through.  If you’re looking for a fun giant-monster movie this is it even if you never play the game.  I wouldn’t be surprise if a sequel is in the works.

Robocop

robocop2014

This film is a remake of the iconic and classic 1987 movie of the same name. This remake carries a different message and meaning which separates it from the Paul Verhoven’s version. In this Robocop, it blurs the line between man and machine rather than social commentary of commercialism. Overall it’s a great action movie that stands on it’s own merits, and I can only hope a sequel is in the works soon.

Man of Steel

After a disappointing reboot from Bryan Singer in 2006, Zack Snyder looks to recapture the excitement in his version of the Man of Steel. Henry Cavil plays a physically imposing Superman that makes all other previous actors who played the son of Krypton look puny. This reboot covers the origin and General Zod and his minions. The non-linear storyline  gives it a unique take on telling the origin of a super hero, but the actual delivery of the story feels like its dragging a little too long. Overall the movie was enjoyable, but didn’t match the hype that surrounded it. Good thing is that it sets the bar low for a sequel and hopefully we get something as exciting and powerful as “The Dark Knight”.

Star Trek into Darkness

startrekintodarkness

Star Trek Into Darkness has been a long anticipated sequel right when the first movie hit the theaters in 2009.  Unlike its predecessor where it was mostly about the origins of the crew this movie really focuses on Kirk and Spock’s relationship.

In this film Kirk and his crew must hunt down a terrorist that as bombed a building and killed Starfleet officers. I don’t want to give too much away, but overall the movie is enjoyable. The plot feels a bit rushed at times, and it many of the other characters didn’t get much screen time as they did in the first movie.

Star Trek Into Darkness is a great sequel and I’m almost certain a third movie will be in the works as I felt JJ Abrams held back a bit in this movie.

The Avengers

I got to see this movie on opening weekend. The lines were long and the reviews were raving.  I collected comics when I was a kid and the Avengers and each of the super heroes in it were all part of my childhood.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock the Avengers movie is about super heroes such as Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the incredible Hulk teaming together and forming a team to battle a powerful villain trying to take over Earth.  Whether you were a comic collector or not or haven’t seen the previous Marvel films this movie is still fun to watch.  It has everything you want in a blockbuster summer movie; action, comedy, a great story, and a Hulk.  What more could you ask for?  If you haven’t seen this movie yet go out and check it out now.

Lockout

Guy Pearce plays a cop or some type of  government agent named Snow that gets put in jail for a crime he didn’t commit.  But when a maximum security prison located in orbit around the Earth gets overrun by the inmates they happen to kidnap the President’s daughter, who happens to be on a  humanitarian mission to the space prison. The people that put Snow away now want his help.  Snow now much sneak into the prison and rescue the President’s daughter.

Seeing Guy Pearce playing a sci fi action hero was kind of weird. Almost as weird as seeing Adrien Brody in Predators. But Pierce plays it well and he can be pretty funny at times. There’s enough action in the movie to keep you entertained and some of the CG effects are just plain laughable.

Captain America

One of the most iconic Marvel Super Heroes has finally made it to the silver screen. Captain America, the future leader of the Avengers, battles Red Skull and a boatload of Nazis.

Fans of Captain America will love this movie, but what makes this movie standout compared to the other Marvel movies is that this film really focused on the character development of Steve Rogers. It’s not his super soldier powers that makes him such a likable guy, but it’s his unwavering integrity and loyalty to his country and friends.

If I had to fault this movie it would be that the second half of the film is not has solid as the first. Overall, this movie is fun and exciting and makes the upcoming Avenger movie more compelling.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Shia LaBeouf and his mechanical friends are back saving the world again. This 2 and a half hour car / Victoria Secret commercial does best the last Transformers movie, but it couldn’t out shine the original.  This movie is action packed and filled with explosions and destruction  as you would expect from Michael Bay.  Besides some corny moments and slow mo sequences the story line is decent and isn’t too over the top compared to the previous film, but nonetheless it’s still a Michael Bay movie, so who cares about movie plots?   It’s all about fireworks, hot girls and fast cars.

Battle: LA

Battle: LA is a classic alien invasion movie. The aliens crash onto earth and begin their attack. Los Angeles becomes the last stronghold for the West Coast.  A group of marines are sent out on a rescue mission only to become the ones that needed to be rescued themselves.

This movie starts off painfully slow. The action does picks up, but not enough to feel satisfied. There are a few things about the movie that bugs me.  Besides the cliche plot, the film feels like it’s one of those shaky-cam movies, and almost every scene in the movie is either a close-up or a medium shot that makes it feel claustrophobic. I enjoy watching these alien invasion movies, but Battle: LA brings nothing new to the table. I think the movie should have focused a little more on the macroscopic view of the invasion rather than just solely on a small platoon of marines with personal issues.

Liam Neeson is Martin Harris, a doctor and husband visiting Germany with his wife to delivery an important medical presentation, but he ends up in a car accident that leaves him in a coma for four days. This is an interesting thriller that has some very interesting plot twists and surprises.
