Avengers Infinity War

The hype is real.  10 years in the making with some great and not-so-great films leading up to the arrival of Thanos to gather all the Infinity stones to be come a god.  This movie can only be truly appreciated if you invested in previous Marvel movies. They somehow managed to squeeze all these star studded casts and characters without bogging down the plot or create some weird disorienting story line.  It’s hard to talk about the movie without spoiling it. All I can say is that I enjoyed the movie from the opening screen till the end credits.

Rampage

Rampage is loosely based off one of my favorite childhood games. I remember playing this game hours on ends on the Sega Master System.  Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays the titular role in saving the world.  Unlike other movies based on video games Rampage is a fun and exciting through and through.  If you’re looking for a fun giant-monster movie this is it even if you never play the game.  I wouldn’t be surprise if a sequel is in the works.

Robocop

This film is a remake of the iconic and classic 1987 movie of the same name. This remake carries a different message and meaning which separates it from the Paul Verhoven’s version. In this Robocop, it blurs the line between man and machine rather than social commentary of commercialism. Overall it’s a great action movie that stands on it’s own merits, and I can only hope a sequel is in the works soon.

Gravity

Gravity

Sandra Bullock and George Clooney play two astronauts fixing the Hubble telescope. Their shuttle and crew are destroyed by space debris and now they must find a way to get back home.  This visceral thriller is visually stunning and powerful. I’m not sure what’s it like to be an astronaut, and this film does its best to make you feel like you’re helplessly orbiting miles above earth.  Unlike other movies that takes place in space, Gravity immerses in a zero gravity environment, so be warned that if you’re prone to motion sickness you may need to take a Dramamine before seeing this film.

World War Z

Pitt plays Gerry Lane, a devoted family man that quit his job as UN Inspector to be with his wife and children. When his city is attacked by zombies Gerry and his family escapes and seeks refuge on a Navy ship. In order to keep his family safe Gerry agrees to return to work in find the cause of the infection and find a cure.  Many will be disappointed that this movie has nothing to do with Max Brook’s novel, but the movie stands well on its own. This is probably one of the best zombie movies around as it covers all areas that really make for an exciting undead flick. You get to see the macro affects of a zombie invasion as well as the close-quarters claustrophobic encounters keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Man of Steel

After a disappointing reboot from Bryan Singer in 2006, Zack Snyder looks to recapture the excitement in his version of the Man of Steel. Henry Cavil plays a physically imposing Superman that makes all other previous actors who played the son of Krypton look puny. This reboot covers the origin and General Zod and his minions. The non-linear storyline  gives it a unique take on telling the origin of a super hero, but the actual delivery of the story feels like its dragging a little too long. Overall the movie was enjoyable, but didn’t match the hype that surrounded it. Good thing is that it sets the bar low for a sequel and hopefully we get something as exciting and powerful as “The Dark Knight”.

Star Trek into Darkness

Star Trek Into Darkness has been a long anticipated sequel right when the first movie hit the theaters in 2009.  Unlike its predecessor where it was mostly about the origins of the crew this movie really focuses on Kirk and Spock’s relationship.

In this film Kirk and his crew must hunt down a terrorist that as bombed a building and killed Starfleet officers. I don’t want to give too much away, but overall the movie is enjoyable. The plot feels a bit rushed at times, and it many of the other characters didn’t get much screen time as they did in the first movie.

Star Trek Into Darkness is a great sequel and I’m almost certain a third movie will be in the works as I felt JJ Abrams held back a bit in this movie.

Oblivion

Earth has been destroyed and is left lifeless except for the few alien scavs that the humans have defeated. Tom Cruise plays Jack Harper, a drone repairman that is stationed on earth to repair drones that secures the harvesters from the scavs.  He and his female partner, Victoria, have few weeks left on their mission until they get sent back to Titan, a moon that orbits Saturn where the rest of earth’s survivors have seek refuge.  Harper soon finds out that the scavs are not who they really are and his mission is more than a drone repairman.

The plot in this movie unfolds at a snail’s pace, but it ramps up at the end. This sci fi movie has a great premise but the it fails to get you to the edge of your seat for very long.

Twilight – Breaking Dawn Part 2

The last and final chapter in the Twilight film saga ends with Breaking Dawn part 2. I’ve never read any of the books and I only watched the movies to see what all the buzz was about. The first two movies were interesting and actually had a good plot, but the movies following it seems to have ditched a solid story line and actual acting.

Break Dawn part 2 unites many of the vampire friends and werewolves of the Cullen family to protect Bella and her new child from the Volturi (a powerful coven of vampires that enforces the laws in the vampire world), And in this vampire world having an immortal child is in violation of their laws. I think it’s ironic how the character played by Dakota Fanning looks barely older than Bella’s daughter.

Anyhow, like the previous movies Breaking Dawn part 2 is just as corny and filled with bad acting. Unless you’ve seen the previous 4 movies there shouldn’t be any reason to go out to catch this movie.

Skyfall

Daniel Craig reprises his role as the British secret spy agent in Skyfall.  In Skyfall Bond is presumed dead after being shot while recovering a stolen hard drive containing the identities of other operatives spying in terrorist organizations.  After living his life in hiding  Bond returns when he finds that out his employer, MI6, has been bombed.  Soon it is known that the bombing wasn’t a terrorist attack, but an attack on M, the head of MI6. Bond now must find track the suspects down before they kill M.

Unlike many of the previous Bond movies you won’t see any awesome spy gadgets or spy cars. This film focuses on Bond’s past and his relationship with M. This is a worthy film of the franchise but not Daniel Craig’s best. That goes to Casino Royale.
